HISTORY

The saying is true that great things have smaller beginnings.

Little did we hear in the early sixties’ and seventies about sunday school work in the Diocese. Our records show that, the 1st Sunday School District Teachers Conference was held in 1968 at Freeman College, Kumasi with 9 delegates from the following societies - Kumasi 4, Amakom 2, New Tafo 1, Agogo 1 and Akua-krom 1.

The Conference was organized by Bro. P.K. Kyei the then District Youth Organizer (D.Y.O). Present at the Conference were, Rev. M.K. Debrah, Chairman of the Ashanti/Brong Ahafo District, Rev. Doni-Kwame and Rev. J.K. Foh-Amoaning - connexional Secretary. since that year nothing was heard about the Diocese Coming together, even though throughout those years courses were organized for the whole connexion by the connexional youth organizers in which the district was a participant. The diocesan Sunday School came into the picture again in 1979 when another teachers conference was organized by them. D.Y.O. Bro. A.K.A Yawson at Wesley College and another one in 1980 at Obuasi. during these two years a diocese Sunday School Secretary in the name of Bro. E. Oppong-Fosu was appointed to co-ordinate the activities of the school. since then there has been conferences.

1981 saw the birth of what was known as the Kumasi District Sunday School Teachers Council. A District Teachers Meeting was organized by the then District Youth Organizer and at the meeting, a diocese council was formed under the chairmanship of Bro. John Y. Mensah with Bro. Eduam as Secretary. In 1984, Bro. I.K. Buckman was elected the Diocese Secretary. He brought great impact and vim into the Sunday school work in the district. And so it was not surprising that, at the 24th annual Synod held at Effiduase in 1985 he was commended on his hard work. A letter of congratulations was sent to him by the synod.

The following people are past District Council Executives.

We are able to say that by God's grace and through prayers and constant visitations to circuits, teachers councils have been formed in most of the circuits. District children's camp was started in 1988 with 150 children from 5 circuits, but now we can boast of more than about thousands of children from almost all 39 Circuits. The Diocese periodically organized courses, retreats and seminars for its teachers.

The Diocese Council together with Rev. E.E. Ackon were the organizers of the first National Teachers Conference held at Wesley College, Kumasi in 1986. During the conference, a National Executive Council was formed with our Bros. Isaac K. Buckman and Thomas Addai being elected as Chairman and Secretary respectively. This is a great achievement for the diocese. Indeed Kumasi Diocesan Sunday School has made great strides for which she owes a great deal of thanks to God, to whom be the glory for the great things, he has done, is doing, and will continue to do. Amen!
